Research Experience

 As a Brigham Young University Cancer Research Fellow, you will be conducting rigorous research.  It is essential that you have had prior experience in a cancer research lab.  We recommend you start now to find out what research is being done on campus.  Current BYUCRC faculty and their research at BYU can be found at http://cancerresearch.byu.edu/crcmembership/.

 You may be surprised by the variety of projects underway, and may wonder which one is right for you.  We’d like to suggest that any research experience as an undergraduate can turn into a great one with some persistence and hard work.  Most undergraduates learn to enjoy the work they are involved in.
  
 BYUCRC Fellowship Program Minimum Requirement:  One semester in a cancer research laboratory. 

 This will allow your faculty mentor to write a strong letter of recommendation and will enable you to prepare a competitive research proposal. These two elements of your application receive the most consideration.

Solid Academic Background

Your coursework will also prepare you by giving you a knowledge base and developing analytical skills to aid you in your research.
                      
 BYUCRC Fellowship Requirement:  There are no required courses for the BYUCRC Fellowship. 
  
 However, most labs on campus usually require specific courses to prepare you for research.
  
 For example labs involved in synthesis may require organic chemistry coursework. 
 Find out what courses are required for the lab you would like to work in.
  
 (For example, working in a synthesis lab requires organic chemistry.)
 Here are some courses that may help you prepare for research:
  
 Chem 105, 106, 107, or 111,112, 227             Bio 120, 220, 240, 241, 360
 Chem 351, 352, 353
  
 Solid performance in cancer research is more important than GPA.
